The Literacy & Numeracy Intervention Programme
One of the recommendations from the “National Policy on the Reintegration Teen Mothers into the Formal School System” addressed the remedial needs of teen mothers many of whom are struggling and are in need of urgent literacy and numeracy intervention.
The Women’s Centre Foundation of Jamaica Literacy and Numeracy Intervention Programme is a technology-enhanced initiative sponsored by the
American Friends of Jamaica; and will see the implementation structured individualized self-paced training resources to strengthen literacy and numeracy at the grade 7-9 grade levels across centres islandwide. Individualized learning
The literacy and numeracy programme is implemented across grades 7-9. The learning activities at each grade level are organized into the following categories: (a) Basic, (b) Intermediate, and (c) Advanced. Students will also be required to master the basic levels before moving on to more advanced levels.
As students’ progress through the programme, they will unlock different stages along their learning path. Each activity will be linked to the Ministry of Education’s National Standards Curriculum learning competencies and will form an individualized learning plan for each student in the programme. Teachers and counselors will be able to monitor students’ progress in the programme and identify strengths and weaknesses in order to provide encouragement and support.
